“RENT IS KILLING US” — ONDO YOUTHS PROTEST EXPLOITATION BY LANDLORDS, AGENTS

Youths in Ondo State have staged a peaceful protest against the rising cost of house rent, calling on the state government to urgently regulate the activities of landlords and real estate agents to curb what they described as arbitrary and exploitative pricing.

The protesters, drawn from different parts of the state, converged at strategic locations, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Rent Is Becoming Unaffordable,” “Housing Is a Right, Not a Privilege,” and “Regulate Agents Now.

According to the demonstrators, the continuous hike in rent across major towns has placed an unbearable financial burden on young people, low-income earners, and small business owners, forcing many to live in overcrowded or substandard conditions.

“Landlords and agents increase rent at will without justification. Young people can no longer afford decent housing,” one of the protesters said.

The youths accused some property agents of inflating prices through excessive agency fees and unethical practices, urging the government to establish clear guidelines and enforcement mechanisms to protect tenants from exploitation.

They called on the Ondo State Government to introduce policies that would regulate rent increments, monitor estate agents’ operations, and promote affordable housing schemes for residents.

While the protest remained peaceful, security operatives were deployed to maintain order and ensure free movement of people and vehicles in the affected areas.

As of the time of filing this report, the state government had yet to issue an official response to the demands, though public reactions continue to grow on social media, with many residents expressing support for the protesters’ call for housing reforms.

The development adds to ongoing national conversations around rising living costs and the need for stronger housing regulations to ease the burden on Nigerians.
