NIRS URGES PUBLIC TO IGNORE MISLEADING CLAIMS ON TAX REFORMS

The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NIRS), Dr. Zacchaeus Adedeji, has clarified that the new tax reforms are designed to benefit the poor and vulnerable, emphasizing that no tax official will access individuals' bank accounts or track transactions.

Addressing concerns about the reforms, Adedeji stated that narratives suggesting bank transfers will be monitored are misinformation, and that taxation will only apply to income, returns, profit, and consumption.

"The poor are the main beneficiaries of the new tax reforms," Adedeji said. "We can only tax income, returns, profit, and consumption. There's no provision for tracking bank transactions or accessing account details."

The NIRS aims to promote transparency and fairness in taxation, focusing on improving revenue collection and enhancing compliance.
