“OBEY THE COURT OR FACE SANCTIONS” — WIKE WARNS AS FCTA STRIKE HANGS IN BALANCE
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has threatened sanctions against striking staff of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), following a court order directing an immediate end to the ongoing industrial action.
Wike issued the warning while addressing the situation surrounding the strike, stressing that the rule of law must be respected and that government operations in the nation’s capital cannot be held hostage by prolonged industrial action.
According to the minister, the court order clearly directed workers to resume duties, warning that continued defiance could attract disciplinary measures in line with public service rules.
“There is a court order. Government expects compliance. Anyone who chooses to disobey the law should be ready to face the consequences,” Wike said.
The strike, embarked upon by FCTA workers over unresolved welfare and salary-related concerns, has disrupted essential services within the Federal Capital Territory, affecting residents and businesses.
Wike noted that while the administration remains open to dialogue and negotiations, industrial actions must be pursued within the confines of the law, especially after judicial intervention.
He assured residents of Abuja that the FCT Administration is working to restore normalcy and ensure uninterrupted delivery of public services, adding that talks with labour representatives are ongoing.
Labour unions, on their part, have maintained that their demands remain unresolved, though they acknowledged the court ruling and indicated that consultations were underway on the next line of action.
The development comes amid heightened tensions between government authorities and organised labour, as workers across several sectors continue to press for improved working conditions and better remuneration.
Residents of the FCT now await the next move from union leaders as the standoff enters a critical phase.
