ONDO GOVT PRIORITISES WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AS 200 GRADUATE FROM SKILL-UP PROGRAMME
Akure, Ondo State —
The Ondo State Government has empowered 200 women as the first batch of beneficiaries under the O’Datiwa Skill-Up Initiative, a skills acquisition and empowerment programme aimed at promoting economic self-reliance and poverty reduction across the state.
The graduation ceremony, held in Akure, was attended by top government officials, programme facilitators, and beneficiaries from different local government areas.
The Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Adelami Olayide in his address underscored the importance of women empowerment as a critical driver of sustainable development, noting that equipping women with practical skills strengthens families, communities, and the state’s economy.
He also described the O’Datiwa Skill-Up Initiative as a deliberate intervention by the current administration to address unemployment, promote entrepreneurship, and ensure inclusive growth, particularly at the grassroots level. He assured beneficiaries of the government’s continued commitment to programmes that enhance human capital development.
Earlier in her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. (Mrs.) Osamaye, whose ministry coordinated and implemented the programme, highlighted the objectives of the initiative and the role of her ministry in advancing women-focused policies.
Hon. Osamaye explained that the beneficiaries underwent weeks of intensive training in various vocational and entrepreneurial skills, including fashion design, catering and food processing, hairdressing, soap and cosmetics production, and other small-scale business ventures.
She emphasized that the empowerment programme was designed not only to impart skills but also to encourage self-reliance, reduce economic vulnerability among women, and create pathways for sustainable livelihoods. The commissioner added that the ministry would continue to roll out similar initiatives in phases to reach more women and youths across the state.
According to her, empowering women remains a priority of the present administration, as women play a vital role in economic growth and social stability.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the state government, describing the programme as timely and impactful. They pledged to put the skills acquired to productive use by establishing small businesses and contributing positively to their communities.
