OYO SPEAKER, OGUNDOYIN PLEDGES BILL TO REGULATE HOUSE AGENTS ACTIVITIES
The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has announced plans by the legislature to introduce a bill aimed at regulating the activities of house agents across the state, in a move to curb alleged extortion and restore order to the housing sector.
Ogundoyin made the disclosure in Ibadan while addressing stakeholders at a youth-focused engagement organised by the Oyo State Agency for Youth Development. He expressed concern over widespread complaints from residents about unregulated house agents, who are often accused of charging excessive fees and exploiting prospective tenants.
According to the Speaker, the proposed legislation will establish clear guidelines for the operations of house agents, promote transparency, and protect residents from unfair practices. He said the House of Assembly is committed to ensuring that access to accommodation in the state is not hindered by arbitrary charges or unethical conduct.
Ogundoyin disclosed that a committee would be set up by the Assembly to work on the draft bill, adding that the legislative process would be fast-tracked to ensure timely passage. He noted that once passed, the bill would be forwarded to Governor Seyi Makinde for assent.
The Speaker described the initiative as part of broader efforts by the Assembly to respond to the concerns of citizens and improve the living conditions of residents in Oyo State. He stressed that regulation, rather than suppression, is necessary to sanitise the housing market and encourage professionalism among agents.
Beyond housing reforms, Ogundoyin also used the occasion to urge young people in the state to embrace modern skills and productive ventures.
He advised youths to steer clear of social vices, including cybercrime and other unlawful activities, emphasising that skill acquisition remains key to economic empowerment and sustainable development.
The stakeholders’ meeting, which brought together youth leaders and representatives of various organisations, focused on strategies to enhance youth participation in governance and economic growth within the state.
The proposed bill, if enacted, is expected to provide legal backing for monitoring house agents’ operations and offer relief to tenants who have long complained about rising accommodation costs driven by unregulated practices.
