Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor, who was elected on the PDP platform in 2023, formally announced his defection on Thursday, January 2, 2026, during a ceremony held in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
Mutfwang had earlier submitted a resignation letter dated December 29, 2025, to his ward chairman in Ampang West, Mangu Local Government Area, effectively ending his membership of the PDP.
Speaking at the event, the governor said his decision to join the APC was driven by the need for purposeful leadership, better alignment with the Federal Government, and a clearer developmental direction for Plateau State.
He described the move as a “journey of faith”, noting that it was necessary to promote unity, peace, and accelerated development in the state.
Mutfwang thanked the PDP for providing him with a political platform but insisted that his defection was in the overall interest of Plateau people. He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging his full support for the president’s 2027 re-election bid.
The Plateau APC Chairman, Rufus Bature, formally received the governor into the party and presented him with an APC membership card.
APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, described the defection as a bold and patriotic decision, adding that it further strengthens the party’s dominance in the North-Central region.
Prominent APC leaders, including former Governor Simon Lalong, senators, and members of the House of Representatives, were present at the event.
With Mutfwang’s defection, all North-Central states are now governed by the APC, dealing a major blow to the opposition PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections
