“POWER LIES WITH THE PEOPLE, NOT GOVERNORS” — AREGEBESOLA WARNS APC AHEAD OF 2027

“POWER LIES WITH THE PEOPLE, NOT GOVERNORS”

Former Minister of Interior and ex-Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against relying on the influence of sitting governors to win future elections, insisting that only the will of the people determines electoral victory.

Aregbesola made the statement while addressing party stakeholders, stressing that governors do not win elections, but rather the electorate, whose votes must be earned through credibility, fairness, and performance.

Referencing the 2023 general elections, the former governor noted that political power has increasingly shifted away from political elites and state structures to ordinary citizens who are more politically aware and determined to protect their votes.

“Governors don’t win elections; people do. The outcome of the last general election made that very clear,” Aregbesola said.

He warned the ruling party that attempts to impose candidates or manipulate the electoral process could backfire, urging the APC to embrace internal democracy, transparency, and free and fair elections as preparations begin for the 2027 polls.

According to him, Nigerians are no longer passive participants in the democratic process, adding that voter consciousness and resistance to electoral malpractice have grown significantly.

Aregbesola also advised party leaders to focus on policies and governance that directly improve the lives of citizens, noting that public trust, not political power, remains the strongest electoral asset.

Political observers see his remarks as a timely reminder to political parties ahead of the next election cycle, particularly amid growing public demand for accountability, good governance, and credible leadership.

The APC is expected to intensify internal consultations in the coming months as alignments and realignments ahead of 2027 begin to take shape across the political landscape.
