LAGOS COUPLE ARRESTED FOR STAGING SELF-KIDNAP TO EXTORT ₦10 MILLION RANSOM
A Lagos-based couple has been arrested by security operatives after allegedly staging their own kidnapping in a failed attempt to extort ₦10 million from their family members.
According to police sources, investigations revealed that the couple deliberately orchestrated the fake abduction and demanded ransom, presenting it as a genuine kidnapping incident. The scheme was reportedly designed to raise funds for the husband’s planned trip abroad.
The plot began when family members received distress messages claiming the couple had been kidnapped and would only be released after the payment of ₦10 million. Alarmed relatives promptly alerted security agencies, who launched an investigation.
However, police intelligence and tracking efforts exposed inconsistencies in the claims, leading operatives to trace the couple to their hideout, where they were arrested without resistance. During interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to staging the incident.
Law enforcement officials described the act as criminal deception, abuse of public sympathy, and a diversion of security resources at a time when authorities are intensifying efforts to combat real cases of kidnapping.
The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Police authorities have warned the public against fabricating security incidents, stressing that anyone found guilty of such acts will face the full weight of the law.
