TENSION IN IJEBU ODE AS RESIDENTS PROTEST ALLEGED PLOT TO IMPOSE NEXT AWUJALE

A peaceful protest broke out in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Friday as residents took to the streets to express concerns over alleged plans to impose the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

The protesters, drawn from different parts of the ancient town, marched along Awujale Palace Road and proceeded towards the Ijebu Ode Local Government Secretariat, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards to register their displeasure with what they described as ongoing developments surrounding the traditional succession process.

Witnesses said the demonstrators maintained a calm and orderly conduct throughout the march, with no report of violence or disruption of commercial activities. Security operatives were also observed monitoring the situation to ensure public order.

The protesters called for transparency and strict adherence to established customs and traditional procedures in the selection of the next Awujale, warning against any action that could undermine the cultural heritage and unity of Ijebuland.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by the state government or the Ijebu traditional council regarding the allegations raised by the protesters.

The Awujale of Ijebuland is one of the most revered traditional institutions in Yoruba land, and issues surrounding succession often attract significant public attention within the kingdom.
