TRAGEDY IN AKURE: BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION COLLAPSES, MULTIPLE CASUALTIES FARED

Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria — January 20, 2026

At least three persons are feared dead while several others sustained injuries after a building under construction collapsed on Tuesday afternoon in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The incident occurred beside the former All Progressives Congress (APC) state secretariat in the Oba Adesida area of the city. Eyewitnesses said the structure suddenly caved in around midday, trapping workers and bystanders under the rubble.

Emergency response teams from the Ondo State Emergency Management Agency, the fire service, and medical personnel were deployed to the scene soon after the collapse to begin rescue operations. Efforts to recover survivors and evacuate the injured are ongoing, with local authorities urging calm as search efforts continue.

Although official confirmation of fatalities has not yet been released by rescue agencies or the state government, community sources at the site expressed grave concern that at least three people may have lost their lives in the collapse.

Residents and passersby reportedly joined first responders in digging through debris to free those trapped, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Further updates are expected as authorities provide more information on casualties and investigations into the cause of the collapse.

This tragedy adds to Nigeria’s recurring challenges with building safety and structural failures, often attributed to poor construction practices and regulatory compliance issues.

Nigeria has faced numerous building collapses over the years, underlining concerns about adherence to safety standards at construction sites nationwide.
