TUNJI-OJO CHARGES LEADERS TO CHOOSE POSTERITY OVER POLITICS

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, has urged political leaders across the country to prioritise legacy and national interest over narrow political gains, stressing that the future of any nation depends on the choices made by those in power.

Tunji-Ojo made this call during the 2026 Former Legislators Summit, where he delivered a thought-provoking address on leadership, governance and national responsibility.

According to him, nations often reach defining moments that demand clarity of purpose from their leaders.

“The turning point of every nation is the moment when leaders must decide whether to live for politics or live for posterity,” he said.

The minister noted that while politics is temporary, the consequences of leadership decisions endure long after leaders leave office. He warned that self-serving politics, if left unchecked, can undermine national progress, weaken institutions and erode public trust.

Tunji-Ojo challenged former and serving lawmakers to reflect on the impact of their actions, stressing that true leadership is measured not by political survival but by lasting contributions to national development.

He further emphasised the need for leaders to embrace courage, integrity and accountability, adding that posterity remains the ultimate judge of leadership.

The 2026 Former Legislators Summit brought together past lawmakers, policymakers and stakeholders to discuss governance reforms, leadership lessons and pathways to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
