2027: DON’T HAND APC STRUCTURES TO GOVERNORS, NABENA WARNS YILWATDA

DON’T HAND APC STRUCTURES TO GOVERNORS, NABENA WARNS YILWATDA

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena, has cautioned the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, against ceding control of party structures to incumbent governors ahead of the forthcoming nationwide congresses.

The APC is preparing to conduct ward, local government and state congresses to determine its leadership structure at the grassroots and state levels ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, Nabena warned that allowing governors to dominate the process could trigger internal crises and weaken the party’s support base.

He stated that handing over party structures from ward to state level to governors would “breed resentment, deprive loyal party members of opportunities, and alienate the grassroots.”

According to him, the 2027 general elections will require broad-based support, stressing that party members at all levels must be carried along in the process.

Nabena alleged that information available to him suggested that the current NWC may be considering allowing governors to control the distribution of nomination forms and determine outcomes of the congresses in their respective states.

“We will not be surprised if this prediction comes true because the National Chairman himself and more than half of the entire NWC did not emerge through election but by appointment. That raises concerns about internal democratic processes,” he said.

He urged the NWC to ensure transparency by making nomination forms accessible to all aspirants at every level to avoid friction, disputes and potential litigation across the states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“As the party prepares for congresses, reports that nomination forms are being channelled through governors, who may then determine candidates by selection, will not end well. It could mark the beginning of internal crisis,” Nabena warned.

The APC chieftain also called on party elders and leaders to intervene and advise the NWC to uphold internal democracy, adding that safeguarding inclusiveness would strengthen the party ahead of 2027.

He further appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene to forestall what he described as a looming internal implosion.

Nabena expressed concern over the party’s membership strength, claiming that while the APC once had about 40 million registered members, the figure has significantly declined amid the ongoing electronic registration exercise.

“This calls for caution. The party must be wise enough to do the right thing now to avoid unintended consequences,” he said.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC national leadership had not issued an official response to the concerns raised.
