2027 GOVERNORSHIP: OGUN WEST MUST UNITE TO END 50-YEAR GOVERNORSHIP DROUGHT – SENATE LEADER

OGUN WEST MUST UNITE TO END 50-YEAR GOVERNORSHIP DROUGHT – SENATE LEADER

The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has urged stakeholders and residents of Ogun West Senatorial District to embrace unity and internal cohesion as a critical strategy to realise the district’s long-standing ambition of producing the governor of Ogun State in 2027.

Bamidele made the call on Sunday in Ilaro, Ogun State, while delivering a keynote address titled “The Power of Internal Coherence in Securing External Support: Roadmap for Achieving Ogun West Gubernatorial Ambition in 2027” at a programme organised by Ogun West Professionals for Yayi.

The lawmaker described it as unfortunate that Ogun West has not produced a governor since the creation of the state nearly five decades ago, unlike Ogun East and Ogun Central, which have both occupied the governorship seat over the years.

According to him, the persistent failure of the district to clinch the state’s top political office is largely attributable to internal divisions and the inability of political leaders in the zone to speak with one voice.

Bamidele cited the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections, noting that Ogun West presented strong candidates on different party platforms, a development he said weakened the district’s chances and entrenched the long-standing political imbalance.

He argued that the marginalisation of Ogun West in the state’s political leadership was not accidental but the result of years of internal fragmentation and lack of elite consensus.

“While Ogun Central and Ogun East have enjoyed decades of executive leadership, Ogun West has remained politically underserved despite its economic contributions and electoral strength,” he said.

The Senate Leader stressed that the path to success in 2027 requires deliberate coordination among political elites, strategic planning, consensus-building, and disciplined political messaging.

He noted that unity within the district would serve as political capital capable of unlocking party confidence, cross-district alliances, elite endorsements, and broader voter acceptance across the state.

Bamidele further identified Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, as a strong and marketable aspirant from the zone, describing him as an experienced lawmaker with a proven track record in governance and representation.

He advised Ogun West to rally behind a single, credible, and tested political figure within a mainstream national party to improve its chances of success in the 2027 governorship race.

According to him, once internal coherence is achieved, support from other senatorial districts and beyond Ogun State would naturally follow.

Meanwhile, the forum, in a communiqué issued at the end of the programme, announced its endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027.

The group also reaffirmed its support for Ogun West to produce the next governor of Ogun State and formally declared its backing for Senator Adeola’s governorship ambition.

The communiqué commended the Federal Government for what it described as unprecedented infrastructural development and increased federal presence across Ogun West.

It stated that participants unanimously resolved to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing improved political appointments and infrastructure projects in the district.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Health, Dr Isiaq Salako, praised the organisers for mobilising support for both Tinubu’s second-term ambition and Adeola’s governorship bid.

The coordinator of the forum, Mr Dapo Oke, said the event was organised to consolidate professional support for Adeola’s ambition, citing his commitment to governance and regional development.

Also speaking, the steering committee chairman, Dr Yemisi Bamgbose, described it as troubling that Ogun West had remained excluded from the governorship seat for nearly 50 years, stressing the need for professionals in the region to take a leading role in changing the narrative.
