NATIONAL COUNCILLORS FORUM ENDORSES TINUBU, COMMENDS LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY
The National Councillors Forum of Nigeria has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing the restoration of local government autonomy as a major achievement of his administration.
The endorsement was announced on Wednesday during a press conference in Abuja, where leaders of the forum said recent policy decisions by the Federal Government have strengthened grassroots governance and improved service delivery at the local level.
According to the forum, which comprises serving and former councillors across the country, President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda has begun to produce measurable outcomes, particularly in rural communities.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the forum’s President, Dr. Evoh Okechukwu Nwikegwu, said councillors are well positioned to assess the impact of federal policies due to their proximity to local populations.
He noted that councillors, as the closest tier of government to citizens, are able to observe how reforms affect communities at ward and local government levels.
Also speaking at the briefing were Hon. Hyacinth Horvel Turnoe, National Coordinator of the ST/HT Grassroots Coordinators of Development, and Chief Okorie Ikechukwu Raphael, National Coordinator of the Citizens Network for Peace and Development.
The forum highlighted its nationwide structure, stating that it has a network of 8,809 councillors across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas and 176,836 polling units, which it described as a significant grassroots platform.
The councillors described the restoration of local government autonomy as a critical policy shift, arguing that it has the potential to improve funding transparency, accountability, and development at the grassroots.
They also cited improvements in rural infrastructure, agricultural reforms, and security initiatives as indicators of what they described as progress under the current administration.
In addition, the forum commended efforts aimed at strengthening national security, including investments in the Armed Forces and enhanced intelligence coordination.
Calling for early grassroots mobilisation ahead of the next general elections, the councillors urged ward leaders and local coordinators to engage communities on the administration’s policies and reforms.
They maintained that President Tinubu should be given the opportunity to consolidate ongoing reforms through a second term.
Chief Okorie Ikechukwu Raphael also appealed to Nigerians to allow the National Assembly sufficient time to implement amendments to the Electoral Act, stressing that sustained institutional reforms are essential to deepening democratic governance.
