AGEGE COUNCIL LAUNCHES ₦100M GRANT SCHEME TO BOOST YOUTHS, WOMEN-LED BUSINESSES
The Agege Local Government Council has unveiled a ₦100 million grant scheme aimed at supporting youths and women engaged in micro and small-scale enterprises within the council area.
The initiative was announced on Friday by the Chairman of the council, Mr Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, during the graduation ceremony of a Skills Elevation Programme held at the council secretariat in Agege, Lagos.
According to reports by the News Agency of Nigeria, no fewer than 1,000 beneficiaries completed vocational and digital skills training under the programme.
Speaking at the event, Obasa said the ₦100 million intervention is designed to strengthen grassroots enterprises and promote sustainable human capital development across the community.
He explained that the grant would be injected into the local economy in collaboration with Speed Up Lagos (Anti-Poverty Squad), with a focus on enhancing productivity among micro and small business owners.
“This programme underscores our commitment to sustainable empowerment to build a more prosperous Agege,” he stated.
The training covered various skill areas, including catering, food processing, fashion design, make-up and gele styling, digital technology, hairstyling, home essentials production, and sandal making. According to the council, the objective is to equip participants with practical, income-generating skills that can support long-term economic growth.
A former Chairman of the council, Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, commended the initiative, describing it as a consolidation of existing empowerment structures in the area.
Also speaking at the event, Dr Sherifat Adedoyin, a board member of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, said the programme aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader agenda on skills acquisition and economic inclusion.
Some beneficiaries expressed optimism about the impact of the training and financial support. Mrs Kemi Adebayo, who trained in catering, said the programme had enhanced her professional capacity and would help her expand her food business. Mr Olalekan Sanni, a digital technology trainee, described the initiative as timely, noting that the skills acquired would enable him to compete effectively in the technology sector.
Community advocate Mr Tunde Afolabi also said the intervention could contribute to poverty reduction and improved community stability.
Other dignitaries present at the ceremony included the Council Vice-Chairman, Mr Adewale Azeez; the Council Manager, Mr Adesina Osikoya; and several community leaders.
The grant scheme forms part of ongoing efforts by local authorities to stimulate economic activity and empower small business operators at the grassroots level.
