AKURE COMMUNITY PROTESTS AGAINST EBENEZER QUARRY COMPANY OVER ALLEGED PROPERTY DAMAGE, THREATS TO LIFE

Residents of communities along Shasha Road in Akure, the Ondo State capital, have staged a protest against Ebenezer Quarry Company, accusing the firm of excessive destruction of properties and alleged threats to the safety of lives within the area.

The protesters, who converged on the quarry site and adjoining roads, expressed concern over what they described as persistent and uncontrolled blasting activities, which they said have caused visible cracks in residential buildings, damaged structures and created constant fear among residents.

According to members of the community, quarry operations in the area have intensified in recent times, with repeated explosions allegedly shaking houses, disrupting daily activities and exposing residents to health and safety risks. Some protesters claimed that flying debris from blasting operations has damaged roofs and household property, while others alleged that vibrations from the quarry have weakened building foundations.

Community leaders said several appeals and complaints had been made to the company’s management in the past, but alleged that their concerns were either ignored or inadequately addressed. They further accused the quarry operators of failing to adopt safer operational practices expected of companies operating close to residential settlements.

The protesters also alleged that some residents who raised objections to the quarry activities were subjected to intimidation and threats, deepening tension within the community and heightening fears of possible loss of lives if urgent action is not taken.

Carrying placards with inscriptions calling for justice and government intervention, the residents appealed to the Ondo State Government, relevant regulatory agencies and environmental authorities to immediately investigate the activities of the quarry company. They urged the government to enforce environmental and safety regulations, protect lives and property, and ensure that companies operating within the state comply with established standards.

The community maintained that while they are not opposed to legitimate business activities, such operations must not come at the expense of public safety, environmental protection and the well-being of residents.

As of the time of filing this report, Ebenezer Quarry Company had not issued an official response to the allegations. Residents, however, vowed to sustain their protest until concrete steps are taken by the authorities to address their grievances and prevent further damage.
