By Opima RealNews, February 3, 2026

In a remarkable display of courage and endurance, a 13-year-old boy in Western Australia swam for four hours through choppy ocean waters to alert authorities and save his family after they were swept out to sea.

The boy, Austin Appelbee, was kayaking and paddle-boarding with his mother and two younger siblings when rough waves overturned their boards and dragged them into deeper waters. Demonstrating extraordinary bravery, Austin swam four kilometres (2.5 miles) to the shore to raise the alarm.

“I was really scared,” Austin told reporters. “I kept thinking I had to make it through, not just for myself but for my family. I said, ‘Not today, not today, not today. I have to keep going.’”

Initially wearing a life jacket, he later abandoned it to swim unencumbered, using breaststroke, freestyle, and survival backstroke techniques, even singing to keep his spirits up. Upon reaching shore, he immediately contacted emergency services to dispatch boats, helicopters, and rescue teams.

Family Saved Thanks to Teen’s Heroics

Marine rescue volunteer Paul Bresland described Austin’s efforts as “superhuman,” noting that his determination directly saved the lives of his mother Joanne, 12-year-old Beau, and 8-year-old Grace. Police inspector James Bradley also praised the young teen, stating his actions “cannot be praised highly enough.”

Austin’s mother recounted the tense ordeal, saying, “One of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make was telling Austin to get to shore and get help. As the sun went down, I feared something terrible had happened.”

This extraordinary feat highlights not only youth resilience and courage but also the critical role of quick thinking and selflessness in life-threatening situations.

Austin’s “superhuman” swim has since captured international attention, inspiring admiration and awe for his heroic determination and selfless bravery.
