AWUJALE STOOL: ASPIRANT CALLS FOR TRANSPARENCY, TRADITION IN SELECTION PROCESS

ASPIRANT CALLS FOR TRANSPARENCY, TRADITION IN SELECTION PROCESS

An aspirant to the Awujale of Ijebuland throne from the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Adebowale Olufeko, has appealed to the Ogun State Government, traditional authorities, and all stakeholders involved in the selection process to uphold transparency, fairness, and long-established traditions.

Olufeko made the appeal while addressing journalists in Ijebu-Ode on Monday alongside other members of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, according to a statement made available to journalists.

He described the Awujale stool as a symbol of leadership that goes beyond governance, representing the cultural heritage, identity, and unity of the Ijebu people.

Olufeko urged authorities to conduct the process in a manner that promotes peace and avoids actions that could lead to unnecessary tension or unrest within Ijebuland.

According to him, the goal of the ruling house is to collectively examine the selection process and present its position respectfully, while remaining faithful to tradition, existing laws, and constituted authority.

The aspirant commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for developmental initiatives in Ijebu-Ode, including the upgrade of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) to a federal university. He also acknowledged steps taken by the state government and the Kingmakers to ensure that due process is followed.

Olufeko further emphasised the sacred responsibility of the Kingmakers, calling on them to carry out their duties independently and in accordance with tradition.

He noted that members of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House expect the Kingmakers to present a qualified royal candidate, known as Omo Oye, from whom the next Awujale of Ijebuland will eventually emerge.

The aspirant also expressed appreciation to the Olori Ebis, particularly the Head of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Alhaji Lateef Owoyemi, for his leadership and guidance throughout the process.

In addition, Olufeko appealed to the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to prioritise developmental projects in Ijebuland, stressing the need for increased federal presence and infrastructure in the area.

The call comes amid growing debate over eligibility and procedure in the Awujale selection process. Members of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House last week staged a protest over alleged attempts to impose a candidate, displaying placards demanding adherence to tradition and the role of the Ifa oracle and Kingmakers.

The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ruled Ijebuland for 65 years and passed away at the age of 91.

Ogun State Government officials have consistently denied any interference in the process. The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, had earlier suspended the exercise temporarily due to petitions from stakeholders and security agencies.

Similarly, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, dismissed claims of imposition as unfounded, reiterating the government’s commitment to due process and respect for traditional institutions.

Meanwhile, the Regent and Head of the Awujale Interregnum Administration Committee, Sonny Kuku, disclosed that Kingmakers are reviewing more than 1,200 documents submitted by at least 95 aspirants to ensure that only a qualified candidate emerges.
