BANDITS TORCH 11 HOUSES IN BENUE AS SECURITY FORCES REPEL FRESH ATTACK
Security operatives have successfully repelled suspected bandits who invaded Anwase community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, preventing further casualties despite the destruction of property.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday through its spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, who said officers swiftly responded to the attack.
“It is true that there was an attack on Anwase community, but our gallant officers repelled the attackers. There was no recorded casualty,” Edet stated.
According to local sources, the suspected bandits stormed Anwase village at about noon on Friday, setting several houses ablaze before being forced to retreat. At least 11 houses were reportedly destroyed during the attack.
Residents disclosed that some villagers sustained injuries amid the invasion, although no deaths were officially confirmed.
Anwase is located close to Abande community, which was attacked earlier in the week. That earlier assault reportedly claimed six lives, including that of a mobile police officer, heightening tension across the area.
A former councillor in Kwande Local Government Area, Lawrence Akerigbe, confirmed the latest incident, noting that the presence of security personnel already deployed to Abande played a critical role in averting a worse outcome.
“The attack occurred around noon on Friday. The attackers burned about 11 houses, and some residents were injured. However, security operatives on patrol encountered the assailants, and once the bandits sighted them, they fled,” Akerigbe explained.
He added that the timely intervention by security forces prevented the attackers from overrunning the community.
Kwande Local Government Area has witnessed repeated violent attacks in recent years, raising serious concerns among residents. Anwase community was also attacked on Christmas Day in 2024, when over 28 people were reportedly killed.
Community leaders lament that insecurity has persisted in the area, with estimates suggesting that no fewer than 76 people have lost their lives to similar attacks across the local government within the past two years.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to strengthen security presence and prevent further attacks in affected communities.
