162 KILLED IN KWARA AS TERRORISTS LAUNCH DEADLIEST ATTACK OF 2026
At least 162 people have been killed in a brutal terrorist attack on Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, making it Nigeria’s deadliest single assault so far in 2026, according to humanitarian and local officials.
A senior official of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Babaomo Ayodeji, confirmed on Wednesday that the death toll stood at 162 as of the latest assessment. He said rescue teams were still combing surrounding areas, suggesting the number of casualties could rise.
Local political sources also indicated that th
e actual figure may be higher. A community leader in the Kaiama axis told international media that up to 170 villagers may have lost their lives during the coordinated assault.
According to eyewitness accounts and local authorities, the attackers stormed the village on Tuesday, targeting residents during a gathering. Several homes and shops were set ablaze, while many villagers reportedly fled into nearby bush paths to escape the violence.
A regional politician, Sa’idu Baba Ahmed, who visited the affected community alongside security operatives, said search-and-rescue efforts were ongoing, with several residents still unaccounted for, including the village’s traditional ruler. He added that some survivors sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention in nearby facilities.
Residents identified the attackers as armed extremists who had previously visited the community to preach and reportedly demanded that villagers renounce allegiance to the Nigerian state. Tensions escalated after residents resisted the demands, leading to the deadly assault.
The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the incident but has yet to release an official casualty figure, citing ongoing investigations and security operations in the area.
Reacting to the attack, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq condemned the killings, describing them as “a cowardly and tragic act of terror.” He assured residents that the state government was working closely with federal security agencies to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
Kwara State borders Niger State, a region that has experienced increased activity by armed groups in recent years. The Nigerian military has recently reported intensified counter-terrorism operations in border communities across the north-central zone.
Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security challenges, including insurgency in the north-east, armed banditry in the north-west, and communal violence in parts of the middle belt. The worsening security situation has attracted international concern, with foreign partners pledging increased cooperation to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
