CASUALTIES RECORDED AS TRUCK CRASHES ON LAGOS–IBADAN EXPRESSWAY

No fewer than six persons lost their lives, while 23 others sustained injuries in a lone truck accident that occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near Foursquare Camp in Ogun State.

The accident involved a DAF CF 380 trailer, painted white and blue, with registration number SNA 287 XA. The vehicle was reportedly conveying passengers and livestock, including 29 cows, from the northern part of the country to Lagos State.

According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash occurred at about 11:27 a.m. and was attributed to driver fatigue and excessive speed.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the FRSC spokesperson in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said a total of 29 persons were involved in the crash.

“Twenty-three persons were injured, while six persons were killed,” he stated.

Odunsi-Oyewole explained that the vehicle was involved in mixed loading, carrying both cattle and human passengers, a practice the FRSC strongly discourages.

“This was a case of mixed loading of cattle and passengers. FRSC discourages this practice because there is no segregation between goods and humans. In the event of a crash, it becomes difficult to separate humans from goods, often leading to avoidable loss of lives,” he said.

He added that the injured victims and the bodies of the deceased were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital, GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical attention and proper handling.

The FRSC noted that investigations were ongoing to determine the precise mechanical and contributory factors responsible for the crash.

Meanwhile, the corps advised motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure regular vehicle maintenance, adhere strictly to speed limits, and avoid driving while fatigued.

Motorists were also urged to comply with all road safety regulations to reduce the incidence of fatal crashes on major highways.
