EARLY MORNING FIRE RAZES SECTIONS OF POPULAR KANO MARKET

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Monday destroyed parts of Singa Market, one of the popular and busiest markets in Kano State, causing significant damage to goods and structures.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of the day, disrupting trading activities and drawing an emergency response from the Kano State Fire Service.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Fire Service, Saminu Yusif, said the agency received a distress call at approximately 3:16 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters to the affected area.

According to Yusif, personnel worked for several hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the market.

“As of about 10 a.m., pockets of the market were still burning, with firefighters on ground making efforts to fully bring the situation under control and stop further escalation,” he said.

He added that details regarding the cause of the fire and the extent of damage would be provided after preliminary investigations are concluded.

Although no casualties were reported as of the time of filing this report, the fire is believed to have caused substantial losses to traders, many of whom store large volumes of goods in the market.

The incident adds to a growing list of fire outbreaks recorded across the country in recent weeks. In a related development, a fire recently gutted a residential building at Fabikez Street, Omagba Phase 2, in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the death of a 95-year-old woman who was reportedly trapped inside the building.

That fire, which started in one of the apartments of a two-storey building, spread to adjoining flats before officials of the Anambra State Fire Service, with the help of residents, were able to contain it after several hours. Property worth several millions of naira was reportedly destroyed.

Authorities have continued to urge residents and traders to observe fire safety measures, particularly during the dry season, when outbreaks are more frequent.
