MAN ALLEGEDLY KILLS BROTHER OVER WITCHCRAFT ACCUSATION IN RIVERS


The Rivers State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a suspect identified as Nwalozie Chiwendu, who allegedly killed his elder brother, Chidiebere Isaiah, following a dispute in Ofeh community, Omuma Local Government Area.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 4 p.m. on Thursday in Ofeh, a community in Rivers State. According to community sources, the suspect accused his brother of witchcraft and blamed him for what he described as stagnation in his life before attacking him with a machete.

Images circulating on social media and viewed by local sources showed the victim with multiple cuts. He was said to have been rushed to a hospital but was confirmed dead before arrival.

The Youth President of Ofeh community, Chinonso Chima, described the incident as tragic and unfortunate. He said he received a call informing him of a violent altercation between two brothers from the same compound. According to him, community members attempted to intervene, but the suspect fled shortly after the attack.

Chima stated that the matter was immediately reported to the police division in the area. He added that the community initially delayed depositing the corpse in the mortuary due to the criminal nature of the case but later did so with police approval. He appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the suspect allegedly attacked the victim with a cutlass after accusing him of being responsible for his personal challenges. She stated that the victim’s body has been deposited in the mortuary and that investigations are ongoing.

According to the police, a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the suspect and ensure he faces prosecution in line with the law.

Authorities have urged members of the public to provide useful information that could aid the arrest of the fleeing suspect while maintaining peace in the community.
