FIRE RAZES 10 SHOPS AT OGUNPA MARKET AREA IN IBADAN
No fewer than 10 shops were completely destroyed following a late-night fire outbreak at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex, located in the Ogunpa Market area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident occurred on Monday night, prompting an emergency response from the Oyo State Fire Services Agency.
Confirming the development in a statement released on Tuesday, the Chairman of the agency, Mr. Moroof Akinwande, disclosed that the fire service received a distress call at 8:11 p.m. from the Baale of Ogunpa, Alhaji Nurudeen Lawal.
According to Akinwande, firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found several shops engulfed in flames on arrival.
“Our officers swiftly got into action and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to other shops and nearby properties,” he said.
He added that the Federal Fire Service collaborated with the state fire service to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
Preliminary findings by the agency attributed the cause of the fire to a generator that was being refuelled by one of the shop occupants at the time of the incident.
Akinwande confirmed that no casualty was recorded, while commending officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Iyaganku Police Headquarters for providing adequate security during the operation.
The fire incident has raised renewed concerns among traders in the area over fire safety practices, particularly the handling of generators and flammable materials within market environments.
