BREAKING: NIGERIA GOVT REOPEN BORDER

NIGERIA GOVT REOPEN BORDER

The Federal Government has approved the reopening of the Tsamiya land border in Kebbi State to facilitate regional trade, following prolonged restrictions that affected exporters, transporters, and agricultural producers.

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed the decision during an interactive session with stakeholders in Kebbi State. He said the approval was granted by President Bola Tinubu after extensive consultations involving security agencies, customs authorities, and neighbouring countries.

According to the Customs chief, the reopening is aimed at easing trade bottlenecks while maintaining strict security and compliance measures to prevent abuse of the corridor.

He acknowledged the economic hardship caused by the border closure, particularly to traders dealing in perishable goods, and assured stakeholders that the government had been working behind the scenes to address the situation through diplomatic and security engagements.

Adeniyi revealed that Nigeria recently hosted a delegation from the Niger Republic Customs Service and its Chamber of Commerce to fast-track solutions to cross-border trade challenges. He said the renewed cooperation contributed to the decision to reopen the Tsamiya corridor.

He stressed that the resumption of activities at the border would be guided by clearly defined security protocols to prevent criminal exploitation. He warned that any diversion of goods outside approved transit routes would attract severe sanctions, including seizure of vehicles and prosecution of offenders.

The Customs boss added that the service would deploy ICT-based system interconnectivity with customs administrations in neighbouring countries to improve monitoring, transparency, and seamless processing of goods.

He also emphasised the importance of developing border communities, noting that inclusive economic growth would enhance security and strengthen cooperation between residents and security agencies.

The Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, welcomed the reopening and expressed the state government’s readiness to collaborate with customs and other security agencies to ensure smooth operations. He also reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the families of customs officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, in line with government procedures.

Representatives of neighbouring countries’ customs authorities commended Nigeria for reopening the corridor and reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation to ensure safe and regulated trade.

Stakeholders, including agricultural producers and exporters, described the development as a major boost for non-oil exports and regional commerce. The President of the National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria noted that the corridor is critical to the survival of onion farmers, given the perishable nature of the produce.

With the approval now in place, stakeholders expressed optimism that regulated operations at the Tsamiya border would restore confidence, protect farmers, improve revenue collection, and strengthen Nigeria’s role in regional trade.
