NIGERIAN MAN SHOT DEAD IN SOUTH AFRICA, COMMUNITY DEMANDS JUSTICE

The Nigerian community in South Africa has been thrown into mourning following the killing of a Nigerian national, Emeka Uzor, in Johannesburg.

According to the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), Uzor was shot dead at about 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at a Caltex filling station in Windsor East, Randburg, an area within Johannesburg.

In a statement released on Monday, NUSA President Smart Nwobi and National Publicity Secretary Akindele Olunloyo confirmed that the victim, who hailed from Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, was attacked while seated inside his vehicle.

The union described the killing as part of a disturbing pattern of violent incidents involving Nigerian nationals in South Africa, raising renewed concerns over safety and protection for members of the diaspora.

NUSA called on South African authorities, including the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The organisation also appealed to the Nigerian government, through the offices of the Consul General and the High Commissioner, to engage diplomatically with South African counterparts to ensure accountability and prevent further attacks.

While expressing confidence in South Africa’s justice system, NUSA stated that swift identification and prosecution of the perpetrators would provide a measure of closure for the victim’s family and the wider Nigerian community.

The union further urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that it is working closely with relevant authorities to pursue justice through lawful and diplomatic channels.
