NIGERIAN MILITARY MAKES FRESH ARRESTS OVER ALLEGED COUP PLOT AGAINST TINUBU
The Nigerian military has reportedly made additional arrests linked to an alleged coup plot targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
According to reports, Major H. Yusuf of the Nigerian Army, a member of the 57 Regular Course who recently completed his Senior Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, is among those detained. He is being held alongside several other suspects connected to the alleged conspiracy. Details of the plot remain limited, and no formal trial has yet commenced.
Investigations into the alleged coup reportedly date back to 2025. Observers describe the situation as opaque, with authorities withholding specific information from the public.
Sources suggest that the plotters initially planned to disrupt the presidential inauguration on 29 May 2023 but abandoned the plan due to inadequate funding and logistical challenges. Reports indicate the scheme resurfaced in 2025 after nearly N1 billion was allegedly transferred in multiple tranches by former Bayelsa Governor Timipre Sylva to accounts controlled by a Bureau De Change operator. Sylva and a retired officer, General Adamu, who are accused of supporting the plot, remain at large.
Investigations later identified retired Major General Adamu and other key figures as part of the network. The initial arrests involved 16 military officers, but a special investigative panel led by Chief of Defence Intelligence Emmanuel Undiandeye expanded the operation, bringing the total number of detainees to 40.
Among those arrested are Brigadier General MA Sadiq, Colonel MA Ma’aji, Lieutenant Colonel S Bappah, and several other officers across ranks and units, including Lieutenant Colonels AA Hayatu, P Dangnap, M Almakura, AA Jarma, and SM Gana. Civilians linked to the alleged plot include Umoru Zekeri, an electrician; Ali Isah, a villa ambulance driver; and Stanley Kingley Amandi, an actor reportedly involved in propaganda activities.
Authorities allege that the conspirators planned to target top government officials for assassination, including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, along with service chiefs and other senior security personnel.
The military has called for calm and urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information as investigations continue.
