RUSSIAN STRIKE IN EASTERN UKRAINE KILLS FATHER AND SON IN FRONTLINE TOWN

A Russian airstrike in the early hours of Monday has killed a father and his adult son in eastern Ukraine, local authorities have confirmed, highlighting the continued civilian toll of the nearly four-year-old conflict.

The attack occurred shortly after midnight in Oleksievo-Druzhkivka, an industrial town in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, an area that has remained a major flashpoint in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Police authorities said the victims were a 44-year-old man and his 23-year-old son, members of a family that had previously fled the region due to fighting but later returned to their hometown.

In a statement, police added that the 42-year-old mother and two other children sustained injuries in the strike and are receiving medical attention.

Oleksievo-Druzhkivka, which had a pre-war population of about 7,000 residents, is located approximately 15 kilometres from the front line, making it vulnerable to ongoing hostilities.

According to the police, the family fled the Donetsk region in November 2025 amid escalating violence but returned roughly a month later. Authorities released images showing smoke billowing from the severely damaged remains of the family’s home, surrounded by debris.

Local officials have repeatedly urged civilians to evacuate frontline communities. However, they have also reported cases of displaced residents returning, often due to economic hardship or attachment to their homes, only to be caught in renewed violence.

Reacting to the incident, Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin expressed condolences to the affected family while voicing concern over civilian movements in conflict zones.

“I am deeply saddened and outraged,” Filashkin wrote on social media, noting that residents had previously been advised to remain in safer areas away from active combat.

Russian forces and allied separatist groups have controlled parts of the Donetsk region since 2014, following unrest triggered by pro-democracy protests in Ukraine. The conflict escalated into a full-scale war on February 24, 2022, a date that will mark four years later this month.

Despite international diplomatic efforts, fighting has continued across eastern and southern Ukraine, with both sides reporting frequent strikes and casualties.
