TRUMP SPARKS OUTRAGE WITH VIDEO DEPICTING OBAMAS AS MONKEYS

6th February, 2026

US President Donald Trump triggered outrage on Friday after posting a video depicting former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama as monkeys.

Top Democrats condemned the post as racist, while the White House dismissed it as “fake outrage,” saying the video, posted late Thursday on Trump’s Truth Social account, originated from an “internet meme.”

The one-minute clip, promoting conspiracies about Trump’s 2020 election loss, showed the Obamas’ faces on monkeys’ bodies for about one second, accompanied by the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

The video repeated false claims that Dominion Voting Systems helped steal the 2020 election from Trump and deliver victory to Joe Biden, Obama’s former vice president.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “This is from an internet meme video depicting President Trump as the King of the Jungle and Democrats as characters from the Lion King. Please stop the fake outrage and report on something today that actually matters to the American public.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, condemned the video, tweeting, “Disgusting behaviour by the President. Every single Republican must denounce this. Now.”

Ben Rhodes, former top national security advisor and Obama confidant, wrote, “Let it haunt Trump and his racist followers that future Americans will embrace the Obamas as beloved figures while studying him as a stain on our history.”

Trump has a long history of targeting Obama, including pushing the racist “birther” conspiracy that falsely claimed Obama was not born in the United States. Since returning to the White House, Trump has increasingly used hyper-realistic but fabricated AI visuals on Truth Social to glorify himself and lampoon critics.

Last year, he posted AI-generated videos of Obama behind bars in an orange jumpsuit and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a sombrero, both condemned as racist.

Trump’s administration has also ended federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, including in the military, as part of his “anti-woke” agenda, which involved removing books on racial discrimination from military academy shelves.

The controversy has reignited debates on racism, political rhetoric, and the ethical use of AI-generated content in US politics.a
