CALL TO DUTY: WHY JANET FEBISOLA ADEYEMI STANDS OUT FOR ONDO SOUTH SENATE

WHY JANET FEBISOLA ADEYEMI STANDS OUT FOR ONDO SOUTH SENATE

Fifty years after the creation of Ondo State, women remain significantly underrepresented in governance, raising concerns about inclusion, equity, and balanced leadership. Despite women’s contributions to social, economic, and community development, their presence in key decision-making positions across the state remains alarmingly low.

Current figures highlight the depth of the imbalance. Out of the 26-member Ondo State House of Assembly, only three seats are occupied by women. The State Executive Council has just two female members out of 20, while the judiciary records eight female judges compared to 14 male judges. Overall, women’s inclusion in governance remains below two percent.

For many stakeholders, this reality represents not just a gap, but an urgent call to action.

Advocates for inclusive governance argue that sustainable development cannot be achieved when a significant segment of the population is excluded from policymaking. They stress the need for strategic cooperation, coordination, and collective ownership of political initiatives that prioritise fairness and representation across all tiers of government.

Within this context, Hon. Janet Febisola Adeyemi has emerged as a compelling and credible option for Ondo South in the Senate, drawing attention not only for gender representation but also for her experience and competence.

Adeyemi previously served as a Member of the House of Representatives, where she gained firsthand legislative experience in lawmaking, oversight, and constituency representation. Her time in the National Assembly exposed her to the complexities of federal governance, policy formulation, and the practical demands of representing diverse interests at the national level.

Beyond her legislative background, Adeyemi is also widely recognised for her involvement in the mining sector, a critical but often underutilised area of Nigeria’s economy. Supporters note that her understanding of the mining and solid minerals industry positions her to contribute meaningfully to discussions on economic diversification, resource management, job creation, and sustainable development—issues that are increasingly relevant to Ondo South and the country at large.

The “JFA 4 Senate” initiative is therefore being framed by advocates as more than a campaign slogan. It is presented as a movement to break structural barriers, deepen representation, and place tested leadership at the centre of Ondo South’s political future.

Supporters emphasise that promoting women into legislative leadership is not about exclusion or tokenism, but about balance, competence, and credibility. They argue that Adeyemi’s blend of legislative exposure, sectoral experience, and grassroots connection makes her well-positioned to advance policies that protect community interests and drive inclusive development.

As political conversations intensify ahead of future electoral cycles, stakeholders insist that Ondo South faces a defining choice—whether to maintain the status quo or to embrace leadership that reflects both experience and inclusiveness.

For many women and youth across the district, the message is clear: meaningful progress requires shared ownership, collective resolve, and the courage to support capable leadership. The call, they say, is not merely to participate in politics, but to help shape a new dawn for representation and governance in Ondo State.
