EDUCATED POPULACE KEY TO GOOD GOVERNANCE – ADELEKE
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has said that an educated population remains a critical pillar for sustaining good governance and accountable leadership.
The governor made this statement on Thursday in Ikirun, Osun State, during the official inauguration of Minaret University, a faith-based institution established by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, alongside the investiture of the university’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullah Abdur-Rahman.
Governor Adeleke commended the founders of the institution for selecting Osun State as its host, describing education as a powerful tool for strengthening democracy and promoting responsible governance. He noted that an enlightened citizenry is better positioned to scrutinise public office holders and demand transparency.
According to him, historical investments in education have played a major role in shaping active civic engagement in the state, enabling citizens to resist poor governance, impunity and abuse of power.
He stressed that educated citizens are less vulnerable to misinformation, adding that access to verified facts empowers them to distinguish between effective leadership and anti-people policies.
The governor assured the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of his administration’s full support, stating that the establishment of Minaret University, alongside existing and emerging tertiary institutions, would further strengthen scholarship and governance standards in Osun State.
Earlier, the Chancellor of the university, Azeez Alatoye, disclosed that Minaret University had commenced academic activities with programmes in areas such as Data Science, Information Technology, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, Marketing, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management.
He explained that the institution was founded to serve as a centre of excellence rooted in academic discipline, moral values, innovation and service to humanity, in line with the ideals of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
Alatoye added that the university is strategically positioned to contribute solutions to Nigeria’s social and economic challenges through quality teaching, research, innovation and community engagement.
In his acceptance address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdur-Rahman, pledged to build Minaret University into a world-class institution focused on manpower development and sustainable socio-economic growth at local, national and global levels.
The event also marked the commencement of the university’s academic session and was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, education stakeholders and other dignitaries.
