FG DEPLOYS 700 FIREFIGHTERS ACROSS NIGERIA IN BID TO STRENGTHEN SAFETY AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE

The Federal Government has deployed over 700 newly trained firefighters nationwide, marking a major boost to Nigeria’s emergency response capacity and the protection of lives and property.

The deployment followed the passing-out parade of Regular Course 6 cadet officers in Jos, Plateau State, after weeks of intensive training. Speaking at the event, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described it as the largest passing-out parade in the history of the Federal Fire Service, signaling a shift from reactive emergency management to proactive national safety.

“These firefighters will strengthen operational depth, improve response times, and enhance service delivery to protect strategic assets, critical infrastructure, and communities across Nigeria,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said.

He highlighted the need for more specialists in Emergency Medical Services, fire inspection, and hazardous materials management to meet international standards. “Safety is a national security priority that also drives economic growth and investor confidence,” the minister added.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged the new firefighters to carry their responsibilities with professionalism and humility. “Wear your uniform with pride, honor, and responsibility. Make the Federal Fire Service proud and contribute to Nigeria’s development,” he said.

Representing the Minister, the Secretary to the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, Major-General Abdulmalik Jubril (retd.), attended the ceremony. Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by his deputy Josephine Piyo, praised the initiative and committed to collaborating with the Federal Fire Service to curb fire disasters and protect lives and property.

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Engr. Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, confirmed that the officers underwent months of rigorous training at the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency Training Camp in Jos. He emphasized that the officers are now fully qualified for immediate deployment in firefighting and rescue operations.

“This deployment demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to building a robust firefighting infrastructure, leveraging technology, and ensuring communities and strategic assets are safeguarded effectively,” Adeyemi said.

The nationwide deployment of these firefighters is expected to enhance public safety, reduce fire-related risks, and strengthen Nigeria’s emergency response system.
