FG ORDERS SWIFT ACTION TO END RECURRING FUEL TANKER EXPLOSIONS
The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to prioritise decisive measures to end the recurring fuel tanker explosions recorded across parts of the country.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, issued the directive during a familiarisation visit by the newly appointed Chief Executive of the NMDPRA, Saidu Aliyu Mohammed, stressing the need to address safety concerns within the downstream petroleum sector.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Lokpobiri said the core objective of downstream sector deregulation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration is to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, strengthen industry operations, and expand national oil prosperity.
He noted that regulatory institutions would ultimately be assessed by their ability to support compliant businesses rather than the volume of regulations imposed, adding that economic sustainability depends on a vibrant and well-regulated energy sector.
According to the minister, immediate attention must be given to critical safety challenges, particularly fuel tanker explosions, which have posed serious risks to lives, property, and public infrastructure. He acknowledged that while progress has been made in curbing the incidents, sustained efforts are required to eliminate them completely.
Lokpobiri also assured of continued collaboration between the ministry and the NMDPRA to ensure uninterrupted petrol supply across the country. He disclosed that under the current administration, licence applications are treated with urgency, noting that none remains unattended on his desk beyond 24 hours.
He further encouraged the new regulatory chief to bring his experience to bear as the country undergoes a transformation in its energy landscape, urging proactive leadership and strict compliance enforcement across the downstream value chain.
The Federal Government has repeatedly expressed commitment to improving safety standards, strengthening regulatory oversight, and ensuring a stable petroleum supply system as part of broader economic reforms.
