FMC OWERRI, IMSU DISMISS CLAIMS OF 567 HIV-POSITIVE STUDENTS, CALL FOR PUBLIC CALM

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, and the management of Imo State University (IMSU) have moved to dismiss circulating claims alleging that 567 students of the institution tested positive for HIV.

The claim, which gained traction on social media platforms on Wednesday, suggested that hundreds of IMSU students were confirmed HIV-positive following medical screening at FMC Owerri. However, checks indicate that no official statement or data has been released by FMC Owerri, IMSU authorities, or the Imo State Ministry of Health to support the allegation.

A senior medical source at FMC Owerri, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the report as misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic, stressing that HIV test results are confidential and cannot be publicly released in such a manner.

Similarly, officials of Imo State University noted that the institution has not received any formal communication from FMC Owerri or any health authority confirming such figures.

Health experts have also cautioned the public against spreading unverified health-related information, noting that HIV testing is conducted under strict ethical guidelines that protect patient privacy and prohibit mass disclosure of identities or figures without official authorization.

Public health authorities urged residents to rely only on verified statements from recognized institutions and warned that the spread of false or exaggerated health claims could undermine ongoing HIV awareness and prevention efforts.

As of the time of filing this report, neither FMC Owerri nor the Imo State Ministry of Health has issued an official bulletin confirming the alleged figure.
