FROM GLOBAL MINING LEADER TO SENATE: JANET ADEYEMI GAINS CONTINENTAL RECOGNITION
Hon. Dr. Janet Febisola Adeyemi, Founder and President of Women in Mining Nigeria (WIMIN), has received the Presidential Recognition Award of the Association of Women in Mining in Africa (AWIMA) at the 2026 edition of the Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa.
The award, presented during AWIMA’s 10th anniversary celebration, recognises Dr. Adeyemi’s more than four decades of professional contributions to geology, mining governance, policy development, and gender inclusion across Africa’s extractive industries. Described as a “Mining Elite,” she was honoured for sustained leadership that has influenced responsible mining practices, regulatory reforms, and the economic empowerment of women in the solid minerals sector.
WIMIN, the nonprofit organisation she leads, has played a notable role in advancing women’s participation across Nigeria’s mining value chain through advocacy, capacity building, and strategic partnerships. The organisation has also supported initiatives aimed at formalising artisanal and small-scale mining while promoting sustainable and inclusive industry standards. Among its flagship initiatives is the Gold and Gemstones Conference and Exhibition (GGCE), designed to position Nigeria’s mineral resources on the global stage and expand market opportunities for women miners.
Speaking during one of the conference engagements, Dr. Adeyemi emphasised the importance of inclusive governance in Africa’s mining future. “The next chapter of Africa's mining story must be written with women at the helm of governance and policy,” she said, aligning with the Indaba’s 2026 theme, “Stronger Together: Progress Through Partnerships.” Her latest continental recognition builds on earlier international acknowledgements, including her listing among the WIM100, which recognises influential women in mining worldwide.
Beyond the mining sector, Dr. Adeyemi’s public service record has also drawn attention in political circles. A former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, where she represented her federal constituency in Ondo State, she is now aspiring to represent Ondo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
Political observers note that her legislative experience, combined with her international exposure in governance and resource management, has strengthened her profile as a contender in the forthcoming senatorial race. Supporters have pointed to her track record in policy advocacy, economic empowerment initiatives, and institutional engagement as indicators of her readiness for higher legislative responsibility.
Her aspiration has also reignited conversations around greater female representation in elective offices, particularly in Ondo State and across Nigeria. Stakeholders advocating gender inclusion argue that increased participation of women in legislative roles is essential for balanced policymaking and sustainable development.
As discussions around the Ondo South Senate seat continue to gather momentum, Dr. Adeyemi’s recent continental honour has further amplified her visibility, positioning her at the intersection of professional accomplishment and public service ambition.
