IGBOHO CALLS FOR DIALOGUE AS NNAMDI KANU ENDS MONDAY SIT-AT-HOME IN SOUTH-EAST

Prominent Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has urged the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to prioritise dialogue with the Federal Government as a pathway to resolving his ongoing legal and political challenges.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by his counsel, Pelumi Olajengbesi, Igboho commended Kanu for officially cancelling the Monday sit-at-home order that has affected economic and social activities across the South-East for the past five years. He described the decision as a constructive move toward restoring stability and economic normalcy in the region.

According to the statement, Igboho views the cancellation of the weekly protest as a thoughtful and necessary step in easing tensions and promoting peace. The sit-at-home directive, which began in August 2021, led to the closure of markets, schools, banks and public offices across several states in the South-East as part of protests linked to Kanu’s arrest and detention.

Beyond the withdrawal of the civil disobedience order, Igboho advised Kanu to actively pursue diplomatic engagement and mediation with the Federal Government in order to break the current impasse surrounding his case. He expressed optimism that the administration of President Bola Tinubu would be open to dialogue aimed at fostering peace, security and mutual understanding.

While acknowledging that self-determination remains a constitutional right, Igboho stressed the importance of peaceful negotiation and constructive engagement as the most viable route toward lasting resolution. He further called on individuals and groups allegedly benefiting from instability in the South-East to desist from actions capable of undermining economic recovery and regional development.

Kanu, who leads IPOB, was convicted on terrorism-related charges on November 20, 2025, and sentenced to life imprisonment. His family has rejected the judgment and indicated plans to appeal the verdict. Following his sentencing, he was transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Centre after a court ruled that the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja was not suitable for his continued detention.

Observers note that Igboho’s intervention reflects a broader call among stakeholders for de-escalation and dialogue as a means of addressing longstanding grievances and promoting national stability.
