COURT APPROVES PROBE INTO TUNJI-OJO’S WAEC CERTIFICATE, DECLINES NYSC RECORDS REQUEST

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted permission for an inquiry into the academic qualifications of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following an application filed by an activist, Mr. Emorioloye Owolemi.

Justice Binta Nyako approved the request while ruling on an ex parte motion brought before the court. The application sought leave to investigate the authenticity of the Minister’s Secondary School Certificate allegedly issued by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The applicant argued that discrepancies existed in the academic claims attributed to the Minister, prompting the request for judicial permission to conduct an inquiry into the certificate.

In a related development, another judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, declined a similar application by the activist seeking to compel the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to release details concerning the Minister’s discharge certificate.

Through his counsel, Mr. Philemon Yakubu (SAN), the applicant had filed a motion pursuant to Order 34 of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules 2019 and relevant provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2011. The motion sought an order of mandamus directing the NYSC to provide information relating to the Minister’s 2006 service year.

The requested information included copies of the discharge certificate, monthly clearance records, details of posting and deployment, alleged abscondment records, internal correspondence, disciplinary reports, and payment logs relating to allowances during the service year.

However, in her ruling, Justice Abdulmalik held that the applicant failed to sufficiently demonstrate that the request was made in the public interest, as required under the applicable law, and consequently refused the application.

Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, Yakubu stated that he would consult with his client to determine the next course of action. He maintained that the objective of the legal action was to promote transparency, accountability, and probity in public office.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Minister regarding the court proceedings.
