JUST IN: COURT RESTRAINS ONDO GOVT FROM APPROVING NEW ALADEOKUN OF ALADE-IDANRE
COURT RESTRAINS ONDO GOVT FROM APPROVING NEW ALADEOKUN OF ALADE-IDANRE
An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has restrained the Ondo State Executive Council, under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, from approving the appointment of a new Aladeokun of Alade-Idanre pending the determination of a legal dispute over the succession process.
The court, presided over by Justice F. S. Akinbinu, issued the order in a suit filed by the Akinboro Family of the Lagokun Ruling House of Alade-Idanre, challenging the appointment of warrant chiefs by the Ondo State Government for the purpose of selecting a new monarch.
The suit, marked HCAK/558/CIV/2025, was instituted on December 31, 2025, following the state government’s appointment of warrant chiefs to facilitate the emergence of a new Aladeokun.
The claimants contended that the appointment of warrant chiefs was unlawful, arguing that under Section 9 of the Ondo State Chiefs Law, warrant chiefs may only be appointed where existing kingmakers are unable to form a quorum due to death or other incapacities.
According to the Akinboro Family, the statutory kingmakers had already met, formed the required quorum as stipulated by law, and appointed Otunba Ademola Akinboro-Akingbaso, from the Akinboro Family, whose ruling house is said to be next in line to produce the Aladeokun.
During proceedings on February 4, 2026, counsel to the claimants, Femi Emmanuel Emodamori, informed the court that despite the pendency of the suit and the service of court processes seeking to restrain further action, the warrant chiefs allegedly proceeded to appoint Chief Ayo Akinnadeju as the new Aladeokun at a meeting reportedly boycotted by the recognised kingmakers.
Counsel representing the warrant chiefs, Chief O. S. Akintububo, as well as Chief Sola Ebiseni, who appeared for Chief Ayo Akinnadeju, confirmed to the court that an appointment had indeed been made but opposed the application seeking to restrain the Ondo State Executive Council from acting on it.
Meanwhile, counsel to the kingmakers, Mrs. Yetunde Ademigoke, dissociated the kingmakers from the actions of the warrant chiefs and did not oppose an order directing all parties to maintain the status quo.
Although the Ondo State Government was not represented in court, F. S. Akinnibosun, through Chief Ebiseni, confirmed receipt of the motion for injunction and requested additional time to respond.
Ruling on the matter, Justice Akinbinu ordered all parties to maintain the status quo and specifically restrained the Ondo State Executive Council from approving the appointment of Chief Ayo Akinnadeju as the Aladeokun of Alade-Idanre pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.
The court also directed that the case be given accelerated hearing and adjourned proceedings to February 18, 2026.
Speaking to journalists after the court session, counsel to the Akinboro Family, Femi Emmanuel Emodamori, described the ruling as just and necessary, stating that the decision had reinforced confidence in the judiciary as an impartial arbiter in traditional and legal disputes.
