EFCC ARRESTS THREE IN MAIDUGURI OVER ALLEGED NAIRA MUTILATION
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three individuals in Maiduguri, Borno State, over the alleged mutilation of the Nigerian currency.
The suspects, identified as Adam Muhammad, Muhammad Muhammad, and Bashir Musa, were apprehended after a video circulated on social media allegedly showing them using a ₦500 note in a manner considered abusive under Nigeria’s currency laws.
In a statement issued on Thursday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that the video prompted investigations by the Commission’s Maiduguri Zonal Directorate, which subsequently traced and arrested the individuals within the Maiduguri metropolis.
According to the EFCC, the trio is currently in custody at the Commission’s detention facility in Maiduguri, where investigations are ongoing.
“The suspects were arrested following a viral video circulated on social media platforms. They are currently under investigation and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the statement said.
The arrests come amid renewed enforcement of laws prohibiting the abuse, defacement, and mutilation of the Naira. Under Nigerian law, acts considered to disrespect or damage the national currency are punishable offenses.
In recent weeks, the EFCC has intensified actions against individuals accused of currency abuse as part of broader efforts to uphold the integrity of the Naira. The agency has reiterated its commitment to enforcing relevant provisions of the law and discouraging practices that undermine public respect for the national currency.
Authorities have urged members of the public to handle the Naira responsibly and comply with existing regulations governing its use.
