EKITI POLICE PROBE SUSPECTED MURDER ATTEMPT AS MAN DIES BY SUICIDE
The Ekiti State Police Command has launched an investigation into a tragic incident in Ise Ekiti, Ise/Orun Local Government Area, where a middle-aged man allegedly attempted to kill his daughter before taking his own life.
The man, identified simply as Segun, was found dead in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026, behind his residence. Police authorities confirmed that the incident is being treated as a suspected murder attempt followed by suicide.
According to residents, the incident occurred after neighbours were alerted by distress sounds coming from the family’s residence during the early hours of the day. Upon arrival, the man was found lifeless, while his daughter sustained serious injuries.
A community member, Mr Patrick Abayomi, said the injured girl, believed to be about 12 years old, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
“She was taken to the hospital quickly, and we were told she is responding to treatment,” Abayomi said, describing the incident as shocking and disturbing.
Police sources confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, noting that investigators are working to establish what led to the tragic development.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Command, Superintendent Sunday Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Eribo, has ordered a comprehensive investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding it,” Abutu said in a text message.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.
Authorities said further details would be made public as soon as findings are concluded.
