FIRE ERUPTS AT LAGOS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL, FAAN CONFIRMS NO CASUALTIES

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed a fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

In an official statement issued on Monday, FAAN disclosed that its firefighting team responded immediately to contain the incident. The agency reassured the public that no fatalities have been recorded.

According to the statement, the fire occurred at Terminal 1 of Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub. Emergency responders were deployed to the scene to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.

“Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to contain the situation. No loss of life has been recorded,” FAAN stated.

Orderly Evacuation Underway

In a subsequent update, FAAN confirmed that an orderly evacuation of passengers and airport personnel was ongoing at the affected terminal.

To reinforce response efforts, the agency activated mutual aid arrangements and sought support from the Lagos State Government, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), among other emergency agencies.

Authorities reiterated that all necessary safety measures were being implemented to safeguard lives and property while investigations continue to determine the cause of the outbreak.

Background: Terminal 1 Remodelling Plan

The incident comes amid ongoing discussions about plans to remodel Terminal 1. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, had previously defended the Federal Government’s proposal to undertake a major overhaul of the terminal.

Speaking during a televised programme last year, Keyamo said the facility, originally constructed over four decades ago, required comprehensive reconstruction to meet modern international standards. He explained that the project would be funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Funding initiative and not through direct budgetary allocations.

The proposed remodelling, estimated at ₦712 billion, generated public debate over funding priorities. However, the minister maintained that upgrading the airport infrastructure was essential to positioning Lagos as a competitive aviation hub within Africa and retaining international airline operations.

Ongoing Monitoring

As of the time of this report, FAAN has maintained that there are no reported casualties, and containment efforts remain in progress. Further updates are expected as emergency teams conclude their operations and authorities assess the extent of damage.
