GUNMEN ABDUCT 12-YEAR-OLD STUDENT IN IBADAN AS POLICE LAUNCH MANHUNT
A 12-year-old female student of a private secondary school was abducted on Thursday morning in the Challenge area of Ibadan, Oyo State, prompting a police investigation.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 7:20 a.m. while the student was being dropped off near the junction leading to her school.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the suspected kidnappers, described as masked and armed, arrived in a vehicle without registration number plates. The assailants allegedly fired shots into the air to disperse bystanders before taking the girl away.
A witness who requested anonymity said the attackers intercepted the vehicle conveying the child to school and forcibly took her despite resistance. The suspects reportedly fled through the Challenge axis of the city.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Ibadan by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade.
“In response to your inquiry, the Oyo State Police Command confirms an incident of suspected kidnapping reported in the Challenge area of Ibadan in the early hours of today, Thursday, February 12, 2026,” the statement read.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the victim was allegedly abducted by unknown armed men as she alighted from the vehicle that brought her to school.
The command stated that the incident was promptly reported and that detectives were immediately deployed to the scene for assessment and investigation. Eyewitnesses have been identified and questioned, with their statements providing useful leads.
The police added that the victim’s parents have been contacted and are working closely with investigators as efforts intensify to secure the safe release of the child.
The Commissioner of Police in the state has directed a comprehensive and intelligence-driven investigation into the incident, assuring that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend those responsible.
The command urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid the investigation, assuring that such information would be treated confidentially.
The incident comes amid ongoing security concerns in parts of the state, following previous cases of abduction reported in Ibadan in recent months.
