GUNMEN ABDUCT NURSING MOTHER, SIX CHILDREN IN EDO

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a nursing mother and several children along the Eko-Abeku-Iyowa Road in Edo State, demanding a ransom of ₦260 million for the release of those still in captivity.

The incident occurred at about 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026, within the Evboneka community along the Benin–Akure Road, as the victims were reportedly returning from school.

The head of the affected family, Mr Festus Bamidele, confirmed that the victims initially included a nursing mother and six children, among them a baby and two younger siblings. He said the abductors later released the nursing mother and her baby after a heavy rainfall on the day of the GUNMEN ABDUCT NURSING MOTHER, SIX CHILDREN IN EDO.

According to Bamidele, the family became aware of the abduction when the released victims returned home. He further disclosed that three other children of pre-kindergarten age were subsequently rescued through a joint effort by vigilante members and security operatives within the Evboneka community.

However, four individuals—aged between 11 and 26 years—remain in captivity. Those still being held include Bamidele’s children, his younger sister, and a sister-in-law.

He stated that the kidnappers have since contacted the family and demanded a ransom of ₦260 million for the release of the remaining captives.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Ms Eno Ikoedem, said operatives from the Ekiadolor Division engaged the abductors in a gun duel during the rescue operation.

She explained that five of the victims were rescued unhurt, while four others were taken away by the kidnappers during the confrontation.

Ms Ikoedem added that police operatives, working in collaboration with hunters and local vigilantes, have launched an intensive bush-combing operation to track the perpetrators and secure the release of the remaining victims.

She assured the public that efforts are ongoing and that the command remains committed to dismantling criminal networks operating within the state.
