ICPC INVITES EL-RUFAI FOR QUESTIONING FOLLOWING ABUJA AIRPORT INCIDENT

Abuja, Nigeria – February 13, 2026 – Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has confirmed that he will honour an invitation from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

El-Rufai made the disclosure in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, a day after an incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where security operatives reportedly attempted to arrest him upon arrival from Cairo, Egypt.

According to the former governor, the anti-corruption agency subsequently delivered a formal letter inviting him for questioning.

“Yesterday, after the futile attempt to abduct me, the ICPC delivered a letter to invite me to their office. My lawyer has written to confirm that I will be attending the ICPC office on Wednesday, 18 February 2026,” he wrote.

The development follows controversy surrounding Thursday’s airport incident. El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, alleged that security agents sought to detain the former governor without presenting a formal invitation and confiscated his international passport during the encounter.

His lawyer, Ubong Akpan, criticised the reported attempted arrest, describing it as unlawful. He stated that his client remains willing to cooperate with lawful investigative processes but stressed the importance of due process.

Akpan further disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier issued an invitation to El-Rufai while he was outside the country. According to him, the former governor’s legal team had formally communicated that he would voluntarily appear before the EFCC upon his return.

“The invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was delivered to Malam El-Rufai’s residence while he was already abroad. We explicitly notified the EFCC that he would voluntarily appear at their office by 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026,” Akpan stated.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the ICPC nor the EFCC has issued an official statement detailing the basis of the invitation or responding to the allegations regarding the airport incident.

The situation has generated political reactions, with some public figures calling for transparency and adherence to established legal procedures.

Observers note that developments surrounding the matter are likely to attract continued public and political attention in the coming days.
