IPOB ANNOUNCES PERMANENT CANCELLATION OF MONDAY SIT-AT-HOME ACROSS SOUTH-EAST

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the permanent cancellation of its long-standing Monday sit-at-home order across the South-East region, with effect from Monday, February 9, 2026.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, who said the directive came directly from the group’s detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

According to the statement, the decision brings an end to the sit-at-home directive that was introduced in August 2021 following Kanu’s arrest and subsequent detention. Since its introduction, the order had significantly disrupted economic and social activities across the region, leading to the closure of markets, schools, banks, and government offices every Monday.

IPOB stated that the cancellation was intended to allow residents of the South-East to resume their normal lives without fear or intimidation, particularly on Mondays.

“With this directive, there is no longer any justification for staying at home on Mondays,” the statement said, adding that all markets, schools, offices, transport services and other economic activities are expected to operate fully and normally going forward.

The group stressed that Kanu personally authorised the decision, noting that the move was aimed at ensuring children return to school regularly and that residents are able to conduct their lawful businesses freely.

IPOB further warned that any individual or group attempting to enforce sit-at-home orders after the cancellation would be acting contrary to Kanu’s instructions and against the interests of the people of the South-East.

The statement also alleged that some individuals were using intimidation and violence under false pretences to compel residents to remain indoors, urging the public to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding.

However, IPOB cautioned state governments against taking punitive actions against traders or residents who may choose, on personal grounds, not to operate on Mondays. The group said no governor has the right to threaten traders with demolition of markets or forced closures, stressing that any redevelopment or renovation of markets should involve consultations with relevant stakeholders and provision of alternative trading locations where necessary.

Calling for unity, IPOB urged residents of the South-East to resume normal activities and send their children to school without fear, insisting that the era of Monday sit-at-home in the region had come to an end.
