KATSINA DPO KILLED DURING ANTI-RUSTLING OPERATION, THREE SUSPECTS NEUTRALISED

Katsina, Nigeria – February 13, 2026 – The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rimi Local Government Area, CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir, was killed on Friday while leading an operation against suspected cattle rustlers, the Katsina State Government has confirmed.

According to the Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, three suspected rustlers were neutralised during a coordinated operation involving security forces and local community members.

In a statement, State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, expressed condolences over the DPO’s death, describing him as a dedicated officer who died in the line of duty.

“The Ministry is deeply saddened by the passing of CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir. His sacrifice while leading an operation to protect lives and property will not be forgotten,” the statement said.

The incident reportedly began after community leaders, including the ward councillor, APC members, the Village Head of Karare, and the District Head of Rimi, alerted authorities about suspected rustlers in Magaji town, under Maje-Gobir Ward. The DPO promptly mobilised security personnel to the area.

Residents confronted the intruders during the night, recovering a significant number of stolen cattle. Subsequent clashes in surrounding areas reportedly resulted in injuries to two men and several young girls, though many of the stolen animals were retrieved.

During a follow-up operation, CSP Kabir personally led a team to the rustlers’ location. Reports indicate that his rifle malfunctioned during the engagement, leaving him vulnerable. He was fatally shot by the gang leader, identified as Maigemu. Three security personnel sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Katsina Teaching Hospital.

The late officer’s remains have been transferred to his family in Zaria, Kaduna State, for burial.

The ministry commended both the security forces and local residents for their courage and reaffirmed Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and eliminating criminal activities in the state.

“The Ministry prays for Almighty Allah to grant CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir Aljannatul Firdausi,” the statement added.
