NATIONAL FIRE ACADEMY UPGRADE REACHES 65% COMPLETION, INTERIOR MINISTER ANNOUNCES

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that the ongoing remodeling and upgrade of the National Fire Academy (NFA) in Sheda, Abuja, has reached 65 per cent completion. He made the disclosure on Friday during an inspection visit to the facility, which serves as the training arm of the Federal Fire Service (FFS).

The minister, who performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the project in May 2025, stated that the redevelopment is designed to transform the academy into a world-class fire training institution. The project currently occupies about 10 hectares of land. Although consultants on the project indicated that construction had reached approximately 70 per cent, Tunji-Ojo said his on-site assessment places completion at about 65 per cent, adding that assurances have been given that the project will be delivered by May.

He further disclosed that the Federal Government has secured an additional 13 hectares of land to establish a paramilitary institute aimed at enhancing professionalism and career development for officers and personnel across agencies under the Ministry of Interior. According to him, the planned institute represents the next phase of development and will integrate training structures to strengthen operational standards within the country’s paramilitary services.

Tunji-Ojo noted that the academy will not only train officers of the Federal Fire Service but will also provide opportunities for private sector participants to receive professional instruction in fire safety, rescue management, and emergency response services. He explained that the initiative is expected to reduce capital flight associated with overseas training, while strengthening domestic capacity in emergency preparedness.

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Samuel Olumode, said the upgraded academy will have the capacity to accommodate up to 3,000 participants at a time. He added that the facility will include a modern firehouse for advanced search and rescue simulations, describing it as a significant development for fire service training within the region. Olumode also expressed confidence that the service has sufficient human resources to manage and operate the upgraded facilities upon completion.

The project forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Interior to strengthen institutional capacity and improve emergency response systems across Nigeria.
