OGUN MONARCH LEADS TASK FORCE TO CLEAR TRADERS OFF MAJOR ROADS

The Olota of Ota, Ogun State, Oba Adeyemi Abdulkabir Obalanlege, on Wednesday led a multi-agency task force to dislodge illegal traders and remove roadside obstructions along the Sango and Oju-Ore axes of Ota, Ogun State.

A statement signed by the Superintendent Route Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Odunsi Afolabi, revealed that the operation was designed to ease traffic congestion and ensure the safety of road users. The exercise involved officials of the FRSC, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency.

The Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Wasiu Lawal, along with council sanitary inspectors, also participated in the operation.

According to the statement, residents and commuters have long complained about persistent traffic gridlocks caused by traders occupying large portions of the carriageway. Speaking during the operation, Oba Obalanlege emphasized that the exercise was aimed at restoring order to major roads in Ota. “We cannot allow the lawlessness of a few to jeopardise the movement and safety of the many,” he said.

The monarch warned members of transport unions and commercial motorcyclists to vacate the highways, stressing that enforcement would be sustained. To prevent displaced traders from returning to the roads, he directed the Iyaloja of Ota to facilitate the relocation of affected traders to designated market land at Sango.

Also speaking, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Akinwunmi Fasakin, represented by Corridor 14 Commander Yinka Akande and Acting Unit Commander Wasiu Ogunmefun, noted that the enforcement would not be a one-off exercise. Personnel would be deployed throughout the week, with support from military officers at the Owode Barracks, to prevent traders from returning to the highways.

The task force urged residents and business owners to comply with the directives in order to improve traffic flow and enhance safety in the area.
