ONDO RESIDENTS SET TO ENJOY REGULAR POWER SUPPLY AS GOVERNOR AIYEDATIWA PROMISES IMPROVEMENTS
Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has assured residents that his administration is taking bold steps to ensure consistent, reliable, and improved electricity supply across the state. The announcement was made on Monday during an interaction with journalists as part of activities marking Ondo State’s 50th anniversary.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s assurance comes following the Federal Government’s recent empowerment of states—including Ondo, Enugu, Ekiti, and Imo—to regulate electricity locally and issue licences to private investors for mini-grids and power plants. This move is expected to increase competition, attract investments, and enhance electricity supply in the state.
Speaking on current efforts, the governor said the state is actively strengthening regulation, improving electricity distribution, and collaborating with existing distribution companies (DISCOs). “We may not be generating power ourselves yet, but in terms of regulation and distribution, we are very active,” Aiyedatiwa stated. “We interface with all DISCOs operating in Ondo State through the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, so we are in charge of our electricity.”
The governor also highlighted efforts to curb estimated billing, noting the introduction of the ‘O’ Datiwa Meter’ initiative. “When residents were receiving inflated bills, we intervened to subsidise meters and ensure fair and transparent billing for our people,” he said.
He further noted that electricity supply has improved in several parts of the state since his administration assumed office, attributing the gains to sustained engagement with power distribution companies. “Electricity has been very constant in some areas, and this is the result of our proactive approach,” he added.
While acknowledging that electricity tariffs remain high for some residents, Aiyedatiwa expressed optimism that costs will reduce over time, comparing the process to the early days of GSM technology: “Just like when GSM started, it was expensive, but today it is cheap. With time, our electricity system will also become more affordable for all.”
The governor’s statement also comes days after promising that the deep seaport project for Ondo State—approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and recently revalidated—will be delivered before the end of his tenure.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s interventions underscore the state’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure, promoting transparency, and ensuring that Ondo residents enjoy uninterrupted and reliable power, a critical step toward supporting economic growth and improving quality of life.
