TINUBU ASSENTS TO ELECTORAL ACT 2026 AMENDMENT AHEAD OF 2027 GENERAL ELECTIONS

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill into law, days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the timetable for the 2027 general elections.

The signing ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja at about 5:00 p.m., with principal officers of the National Assembly in attendance. The National Assembly had passed the amendment bill on Tuesday before transmitting it to the President for assent.

The amendment has revived public debate over the electronic transmission of election results, a subject that has generated sustained advocacy from civil society organisations and opposition figures.

Proponents of real-time electronic transmission argue that uploading results directly from polling units to INEC’s central server would reduce opportunities for manipulation and enhance transparency. The issue gained renewed attention following challenges experienced during the 2023 general elections, including technical issues with INEC’s Results Viewing Portal.

In recent days, protesters gathered at the National Assembly complex to demand explicit legal backing for live transmission of results, calling for stronger safeguards to improve electoral credibility.

While members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have expressed support for the continued adoption of technology in the electoral process, some stakeholders have advocated a phased or hybrid system. They argue that areas with limited telecommunications infrastructure may require a backup manual collation process in the event of technological failure.

INEC has scheduled the 2027 general elections to hold on February 20, 2027, for Presidential and National Assembly polls, and March 6, 2027, for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

Details of specific provisions introduced or modified in the amended Act are expected to be clarified by relevant authorities in the coming days.
